The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is stepping up enforcement by launching an ATO tax audit on small businesses across Australia.
The $11 Billion Tax Gap
Three days ago, the ATO commissioner revealed that small businesses contribute $72 billion in taxes. However, the ATO estimates an $11 billion shortfall in the system.
A Tougher Audit Approach
To bridge this gap, the ATO is intensifying audits. Yesterday, I attended the Waitara Tax Audit Workshop, where the ATO outlined its strategy. In the coming months, plainclothes officers will visit shops in Hornsby and Inner West Sydney. These officers will inform shop owners of their ATO affiliation and ask questions about:
Sales recording practices
Number of employees
Tax return history
Payroll records
A Daunting Experience for Business Owners
Imagine opening your store on Monday, and an ATO officer walks in unannounced. They request information about your cash register, employee records, and financial transactions. For many small business owners, this ATO tax audit could be overwhelming.
ATO to Audit 1,500 Businesses
The ATO plans to visit 400 businesses in Hornsby and 1,500 businesses in total. Business owners must be prepared for these surprise audits.
