Backpackers Tax Refund

The new year has brought major changes to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). If you’re on a 416 (Working Holiday) or 462 (Work and Holiday) visa, it’s essential to understand how these updates impact your backpackers tax refund.

Ask yourself:

  • How do these changes affect me as a 416/462 visa holder?

  • Am I aware of the tax rate I’m currently paying?

Understanding these updates will help you stay compliant and avoid overpaying tax during your working holiday in Australia — ensuring you get the backpackers tax refund you’re entitled to.

How to make sure you can maximize refund from backpacker tax return

Qualify for the 15% Working Holiday Tax Rate

Since November 2016, the Australian government applies a 15% tax rate to income earned after 30 December 2016 for working holiday makers — but only if your employer registers under the working holiday maker tax scheme.

If your employer doesn’t register, the ATO taxes your income at 32.5%, causing you to miss out on the concessional rate.

For example, if you earn $10,000 from 1 July to 30 December 2016, the ATO taxes you at 32.5% for that period. Starting from 1 January 2017, if your employer registers, you’ll enjoy the 15% tax rate.

If you worked during the 2016/2017 financial year, your employer must provide two PAYG summaries: one for income earned before 30 December 2016 and another for income earned from 1 January 2017 onwards.
